A new year and new decade. As we look forward, the good news is that the prevalence of activewear across the fashion industry is going nowhere. But there certainly are a wealth of new sports-ready style trends on hand to update your 2020 looks.
You heard it here first - these six trends will be at the forefront of every fashionistas active wardrobe this spring/summer. Scroll through for an insight into what trends will be translated from the catwalk to the studio for SS20. We can’t wait for you to try them!
Hues of Blue
Blue hues shone through the Spring/Summer 2020 catwalks, opening us up to a world of endless possibilities as summed up by Pantone. It was a breath of fresh air to see leading fashion houses use various tints of blue into their collections, from primary shades through to melancholic pastels. These shades featured particularly heavily in collections from some of the most notorious designers in the industry, including Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneta, Ferragamo and Sportmax.
Blue positions itself perfectly within activewear; wearable yet striking, to cultivate the perfect sporty hue for summer. This refreshing colour is guaranteed to turn heads while you work up a sweat, and is already available via LNDR, Adidas by Stella McCartney and Girlfriend Collective.
Mesh fabric manipulations have trickled down from the SS20 fashion shows to activewear in a futuristic and bold way. Koral’s sheer mesh sweaters help you to hit your fitness goals in style when temperatures heat up. Varley successfully evolves sweatshirts through slouchy proportions and mesh inserts ensuring breathability and relaxation.
We are particularly obsessed with the mesh detailing seen on leggings, which makes for an incredibly breathable and striking look. Under Armour’s take on mesh leggings combines futuristic lines with mesh paneling, which will keep you cool during your toughest workouts this summer. Alternatively, Reebok’s mesh tights with its ultra-breathable fabrication and a moisture-wicking feature are a great option for a luxe look that will flatter your figure. The perfect example of sport-meets-fashion.
Designers across all the fashion capitals have vividly captured the essence of summer 2020 via an update to the prevailing yellow colour of the past season. A tangerine hit is a sure fire way to brighten up your sportswear and reflects the positive vibes of summer.
The colour features regularly in P.E Nation’s co-ord sets and across Koral’s cycling shorts and lustrous leggings. When it comes to conveying those active, summer feels, Tangerine does it so well.
This trend made a serious comeback last season with its 60s and 70s tie-dye prints, but this year’s classic swirl pattern take on a modern twist. The catwalks were awash with linear placements and dreamy ombré patterns, particularly across Oscar De La Renta and Dior.
The sportswear brand Electric and Rose also emanates this free-spirited aesthetics through their SS20 clothing line.
Get ready for sunsets surfs, barbecues, beach yoga and bonfire nights, complemented by this standout print. The modern tie-dye trend offers a considered yet laid-back beach vibe, calling out for summer escapism.
Bye gloom, hello Bloom
Vivid flowers were spotted blooming along the SS20 catwalks. This time designers have refreshed the summer classic through the prism of the 60s, playing with proportions and colours. This flower print embodies the spirit of growth for the spring/summer season, and allows you to tailor the trend to your taste, whether that be through bold sunflowers or delicate daisy prints.
When it comes to activewear, we love the subtle iteration of this trend from The Upside. We’re equally obsessed with the gorgeous ditsy floral print on Varley’s co-ord set and we know you will be too. It’ll be available very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for more details!
Our beloved tank top gets an update for summer 2020 through a new wrap-around design feature, soon to be coveted by every yogi and cardio junkie. The wrapped tank top is a stylish alternative to the standard crop top or training vest, by offering a more creative balance of coverage and breathability.
The feminine aesthetic of this trend is a chic yet practical way to turn up the heat. We love Free People Movement’s interpretation of this summer trend, with its divine selection of wrap-around tanks and crops.
